Traveler looks at the request (Device ID, User-Agent, Protocol, etc.) to classify the device into types. All of the types given are known, but you can easily be classified into one of the known ones by matching something that they match. If you look in the Traveler logs, you can see how they are classified and try to match them however you want. In some of the most recent interim fixes, more of these settings are exposed via notes.ini values (look at the things in the systemdump).
It really isn't designed to be easily extensible as it is designed to support the supported devices and not others, but there isn't anything that necessarily blocks other devices - you just need to be careful not to get misclassified.
